Have you ever paused to wonder what you’d do if your cellphone suddenly went dead during an emergency? It might sound dramatic, but real-life disasters like wildfires, hurricanes, and snowstorms can (and do) knock out cell towers in the blink of an eye—leaving thousands of people totally in the dark. That’s exactly what Eric at Farpoint Farms talks about in his latest video. He highlights a crucial yet often-ignored point: when chaos strikes and your phone signal vanishes, radios can become your one true lifeline.

In the video, Eric recalls eye-opening scenarios: wildfires raging in California that destroyed cell towers and left people unable to reach emergency responders or loved ones. He also points out how a snowstorm in North Carolina stranded his wife (and countless other drivers) in a reception dead zone, making even simple check-ins impossible.

For those of us who rely on smartphones for literally everything, it’s startling to realize that in large parts of the country, reliable cell service is still very much a luxury. Once the network goes down, social media, texting, and even 911 calls can become completely useless. That’s where two-way radios and basic scanner radios come in. While they might seem “old school,” these devices don’t need traditional cell networks—so they can function when cellphones can’t.

Eric suggests that you don’t need a fancy setup to keep your family safer; even a small, inexpensive handheld radio could allow you to call for help or let others know you’re okay. Simply having one in your trunk or emergency kit could change a dire situation into a solvable problem. Plus, if you’re worried about mounting giant antennas or doing permanent installations, plenty of affordable, compact options exist.

What really hits home in Eric’s video is the question: “Why aren’t we talking about this more?” If we want to protect ourselves and our families, we need to spread the word about alternative communication methods. Radios aren’t just a hobbyist’s fancy toy; they’re a real, tangible safety net. Even if you’re not ready to dive into ham radio licensing or GMRS, at least knowing these technologies exist—and how affordable they can be—could be life-saving knowledge when emergencies strike.

Give the video a watch and consider sharing it with your friends or local community groups. With so many disasters happening around the country (and the world), it’s time we highlight all the tools that can keep us connected when it matters most. After all, the best emergency plan is the one you set up before an actual emergency happens.

Stay safe, everyone—and let’s keep this conversation going!
