Finally, a new update.
Today we dropped off the 2024 Hustler Super Z 60 at S&H Equipment in Branson. Service light came on at 106.7 hours. Oil wasn’t low. Manual said bring it in, so we did.
I’m pretty sure it’s the battery. Acid is leaking onto the frame. I don’t think a regular flooded lead-acid battery belongs in a commercial mower that lives on Ozark hills and rough ground. An AGM or gel cell would make more sense. We’ll see what warranty says.
We’re about 400 hours early for the first scheduled service. First oil interval on this Vanguard 40 HP EFI is 500 hours and it holds five quarts. That’s a lot of oil and a long stretch between changes. While it was already there, and because I’m still recovering from surgery last week, I had them go ahead with an oil change and blade sharpening. They said about $160. Worth it to get it done while I can’t wrestle the thing myself.
This mower is a beast. Made in the USA and built like it. Hydraulics are Excel pumps — same kind of heavy-duty setup you see on skid steers. It flies. Between this and a Scag, it’s one of the fastest 60-inch commercial mowers on the market. Neighbor Mike and I both picked these up from the local dealer because we got a better commercial deal on them. We use them on our places and help each other out.
Haven’t posted a proper video update in a while. Sorry about that. This was the first real trip out since surgery. Took Highway 160 into Branson. Beautiful country, but those Ozark roads are a roller coaster. Brought Maddie with me. Glad she didn’t get carsick.
While we were out I was testing the APRS antenna again. Remote country up here — curious how many checkpoints we hit on the way. GMC is running great. S&H has several locations; this Branson shop is one of the bigger ones, so that’s where we took it. They figure we’ll have the Super Z back in about a week.
I haven’t talked much about this mower on the channel yet on purpose. I wanted hours on it first before doing any real review. So far it has earned the “beast” label.
Beautiful day in the Ozarks. Time to grab some food and head the 50 miles back home.
