What a whirlwind of a week! In this video we mill logs with @Whiterock, make elderberry syrup, till the garden, have another chicken death, get ready for seeds, move the farm store, and more! New website is up: https://oldwayon.com with free community you can join at https://forum.oldwayon.com!!!

Hey everyone, Ryan here! My wife Jess, our son Link, and I are so excited to share our latest video. We’ve got a ton going on at the homestead: expanding a local co-op, milling wood for our new studio, wrangling chickens to keep them safe from hawks, and even squeezing in a mini “inauguration day” celebration—homesteader style!

Here’s a rundown of what you’ll see:

  1. Studio Upgrades & DIY Creativity
We’re putting the finishing touches on our home studio, using some sparkly tape and a bit of elbow grease. It’s amazing how a little flair can really change a space.
  2. Leon the Leaning Tree, Reborn
We had an old leaning tree (affectionately called Leon) that had to come down. Instead of letting it go to waste, we’re milling the wood for our studio backdrop. Talk about upcycling!
  3. Inauguration Day Fun
We celebrated with a lighthearted spin on political events. Jess and I even tried a wine toast—maybe a little early in the day, but it was all in good fun!
  4. Farm Co-Op Expansion
Our co-op “Mountain Homemade” is growing! We’re moving our products into a bigger building to accommodate more meat, eggs, crafts, oils, freeze-dried foods, and fresh produce. The whole community is chipping in, which is part of what makes homesteading so rewarding.
  5. Elderberry Syrup Success
Jess made a batch of elderberry syrup, and let’s just say we might be hooked. If you’re looking for something tasty and beneficial to add to your homestead pantry, elderberry syrup is worth a try.
  6. Chicken Run Adjustments
We lost a hen to what we suspect was a hawk. To keep our flock safer, we downsized the run and moved the coop. Hard lessons, but we keep learning and adapting.
  7. Field Tilling & Fire Safety
Spring prep is in full swing! We got the tractor out to till under old crops, and we share a close call from a neighbor’s brush fire—reminding us all how important vigilance is in rural life.
  8. Looking Ahead
We’re itching to plant, but we’ve learned the hard way not to rush the season. In the meantime, we’re dreaming about possible greenhouse expansions and raised bed setups. Big decisions and plenty of possibilities!
This homesteading journey is a roller coaster—equal parts inspiration, hard work, and lots of laughter. We hope you’ll check out the video, drop a comment on what you’re planting this spring, and share any tips you have for running a co-op or protecting your flock. Let’s learn and grow together!
