Have you ever wished you could walk into your own medieval tavern without leaving home? Well, that’s exactly what we're doing by transforming a simple pole barn into a fully themed, fantasy-style backdrop—perfect for filming YouTube videos and hosting immersive gatherings! In our latest project, we’ve started on an epic journey to create a “barndominium” that blends rustic, medieval, and fantasy-inspired aesthetics.



We’re pulling together ideas from multiple channels—Barav Villa for homesteading, Larpcraft for historical roleplay, and Back Road Reviews for product demos—to build the ultimate multi-purpose studio. The first step? 3 Creative DIY Wall Ideas to kickstart our medieval inn vibe!

1. Layered Wood Planks:
   • We began by removing old shelves and covering the wall with rough-sawn cedar planks. Some are stained, some are burned, and some are left lighter to achieve a rich, multi-tonal look. This layering effect gives the wall that perfect “aged inn” feel.
2. Stone or Faux-Brick Base:
   • The lower part of the wall will feature stone-like textures (we’re swapping out the existing fake brick for something more authentically medieval). This base creates a sturdy, fortress-like foundation for the rest of the design.
3. Exposed Beams & Trusses:
   • We’re planning on adding 2x6 “fake beams” that are strong enough to hold lighting and other decorative elements. Not only do they look great, but they’ll be functional too—giving us room to hang lights, gear, and maybe even some medieval décor!

Beyond the walls, there’s a ton of work going into insulation (we’re aiming for R20 or better) and climate control to make filming comfortable year-round. The big dream is to eventually expand this theme throughout the barn, turning it into a versatile space for medieval or fantasy-themed events, product reviews, and all kinds of creative content.

Watching the wall come together is already giving us that cozy tavern feel: dim lanterns, rustic wooden textures, and an atmosphere ready for roleplay, storytelling, and filming product reviews. With some elbow grease—and a lot of linseed oil and stain—the transformation is in full swing.

We’re back with the second installment of our ongoing transformation project—turning a simple pole barn into a full-on “Medieval Inn” style backdrop for filming, events, and everyday homesteading life! If you caught our first post, you already know we’re in the thick of installing rough-sawn cedar planks, creating faux stone bases, and planning for exposed beam trusses. Now, in Part 2, we’ve got some special guests, a few detours in true homesteading fashion, and a scenic lake visit to round it all off.

Day 2: Building the Wall With Friends​

• Team Effort: We had Jason and Terra from White Rock Homestead (@WhiteRockNATION) lend a big helping hand in getting more boards stained, burned, and installed. Their fresh ideas and extra muscle really helped move the project along quickly.
• Surprise Guests: Our friends Eric and Jeni stopped by from Wisconsin. It’s always a blast catching up with them—especially when there’s building, good food, and plenty of conversation going on!
• Fixing the Leak: Midway through, we had to pause construction and head over to our lean-to addition, where we finally traced a stubborn roof leak. A little foam and sealant in the right places, and we’re hopeful we’ve solved the issue for good. We’ll be monitoring it through the next few rainstorms before finishing that part of the barn.

Homestead Updates​

• New Meat Slicer: A huge shout-out to John and Sarah for donating a larger, commercial-style meat slicer. Perfect timing with bacon season on the horizon—we’re excited to slice our own meats in bigger batches!
• Garden & Orchard Changes: Our “Chaos Garden” is winding down for the season. We’re clearing out old vines, pulling onions and potatoes, and prepping the soil for garlic. The grapevines, fruit trees, and orchard are getting ready for their winter rest. Next up: building low tunnels and maybe even a high tunnel for year-round growing.
• Rooster Ruckus: Our resident rooster decided to chime in—loudly—every time we tried to film. If you hear random crowing in our videos, that’s him letting the world know who’s boss!

Finishing the Wall & Medieval Touches​

After all the interruptions (and laughs), we managed to complete most of the wood paneling. Now it’s time for the fun details:

1. Faux Beams: We’ll be adding sturdy 2x6 beams that provide both authenticity and functionality (imagine hanging lights, gear, or décor from them!).
2. Cobblestone Base: Beneath the wooden planks, we’re planning a stone-like finish to recreate that classic Middle Ages inn look.
3. Epic Door: Terra has some creative ideas for a medieval-style door—think iron accents, heavy hinges, and a weathered finish.

Lake Adventures & Waterfalls​

With friends visiting, we took a break from the barn build to explore the beautiful Ozarks. We trekked through a local park area, hopped over rocks, and enjoyed scenic waterfalls. It’s the perfect reminder of why we chose this homesteading life: a balance of hard work, creativity, and the great outdoors.
